Semaglutide has become a blockbuster drug for weight loss, with many celebrities endorsing it, including Elon Musk and Kim Kardashian.
How Semaglutide helps reduce weight?
Semaglutide is a glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP1) analog which was originally approved for treatment of type II DM. GLP1 analog drugs exert their effect by:
- Stimulating glucose dependent insulin release from pancreatic islet cells.
- Slow gastric emptying resulting in an overall reduction in the absorption of nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract.
- Suppresses appetite and increase satiety.
Semaglutide is the generic name for two brand name drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy.
Wegovy is now FDA approved for Weight Loss for patients with BMI > 30 or BMI > 27 with one or more than one risk factors.
Semaglutide is also used to help control type 2 diabetes, and it is administered as a weekly injection to manage obesity.
